HEFMA will have its annual International Conference hosted by the University of Johannesburg.
The conference is geared and designed to bring together association members, international members, Strategic Partners – AUDE (UK), APPA (US), TEFMA (Australia) and Southern Africa institutions; University of Lesotho, University of Namibia (UNAM), University of Botswana and University of Swaziland Swaziland. The 2019 HEFMA Conference will be from 14 – 17 October 2019 at “The Fairway Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort” in Rand Park Ridge.
The conference will also offer workshop/academic session addressing issues affecting Facilities and Infrastructure Divisions. The session will be presented by the Academy for Facility Management (A4FM) and will be on 14 October 2019 (from 08h30 am - 16h30 pm).
The Educational Session will be one of the five topics/modules reflected Modules. The module to be offered on the day will depend on its popularity when interested members and no-members make their selection when registering. If many interested people select more than one, two can be offered in different venues. Interested people are requested to choose the module they want to attend on 14 October 2019.

Babu Sena Paul received his B.Tech and M.Tech degree in Radiophysics and Electronics from the University of Calcutta, West Bengal, India, in 1999 and 2003 respectively. He was with Philips India Ltd from 1999-2000. From 2000-2002 he served as lecturer of Electronics and Communication Engineering Dept. at SMIT, Sikkim, India. He received his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati India.
He has attended and published over sixty research papers in international and national conferences, symposiums and peer reviewed journals. He has successfully supervised several postgraduate students and post-doctoral research fellows.
He joined the University of Johannesburg in 2010. He has served as the Head of the Department at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology, University of Johannesburg from April 2015 to March 2018. He is the currently serving as an Associate Professor and Director to the Institute for Intelligent Systems, University of Johannesburg.
He was awarded the IETE Research Fellowship. He is a life member of IETE and a member of IEEE.
Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology (UP)
Prof Alta van der Merwe is currently the Deputy Dean: Teaching and Learning within the Engineering, Built Environment and information Technology (EBIT) Faculty at the University of Pretoria. Prof van der Merwe’s research focuses on strategic issues within organizations in the 4th Industrial Revolution.
Her focus includes the development of socio-technical solutions with research activities in Enterprise Architecture, Data Science and different theories supporting the successful use of technology in the organization. Her research related to her position as Deputy Dean Teaching and Learning focuses on student success and especially using technology to enhance throughput.
Prof van der Merwe is the Past President of SAICSIT and on International level; she was involved in the proposal and acceptance of the IEEE SMC Enterprise Engineering and Enterprise Architecture Technical Committee, where she still acts as co-chair. In 2018, she was appointed as the IFIP 8 Vice-chair. She is also the South African national representative for IFIP 8.

Dave Root is Professor and Head of School at the University of Witwatersrand’s School of Construction Economics and Management. Until 2011 he was Associate Professor and previously Senior Lecturer in the Department of Construction Economics and Management at the University of Cape Town which he joined in 2003.
He originally trained and practiced as a Chartered Building Surveyor in consultancy in both public and private sector client organisations in the UK before entering academia.
He is a Fellow of the CIOB and RICS and is registered with the SACPCMP as a Construction Project Manager in South Africa. His current research interests are around design management, procurement, and construction industry development.
